Pengertian Elliptical Construction
Elliptical Constructions dibentuk dengan cara menghilangkan beberapa bagian kalimat yang memiliki kesamaan tanpa mengubah makna aslinya dengan tujuan agar kalimat menjadi lebih pendek dan efektif.
Ada dua jenis penggabungan kalimat atau elliptical construction yang dikenal saat ini, yaitu:
1. Penggabungan setara Elliptical Sentence
Elliptical constuction dengan jenis penggabungan setara menggunakan kata penghubung “and”. Jenis elliptical construction yang satu ini terbagi atas dua jenis yaitu:
- Positive elliptics, yang menggunakan kata too dan so.
Jenis penggabungan positive elliptics terjadi bila kedua kalimat yang digabungkan merupakan kalimat positif. Contohnya:
- I drink coffee in every morning
He drink coffee in every morning
Kedua kalimat diatas bisa digabungkan menjadi
I drink coffee in every morning, and so does he atau I drink coffee in every morning and he does too
Contoh lain untuk positif elliptics adalah:
- I like read newspaper
Tedy like read newspaper
Kedua kalimat diatas bisa digabungkan menjadi:
I like read newspaper, and so is Tedy atau I like read newspaper, and Tedy is too
Negative elliptics, yang menggunakan kata either dan neither
Jenis penggabungan negative elliptics digunakan saat kedua kalimat yang digabungkan merupakan kalimat negatif. Contohnya:
- I don’t like swimming
• Mella doesn’t like swimming
Kedua kalimat diatas bisa digabungkan menjadi:
I don’t like swimming and neither does Mella atau I don’t swimming and Mella doesn’t either
Contoh lainnya:
- He doesn’t eat seafood.
She doesn’t eat seafood.
Kedua kalimat diatas bisa digabungkan menjadi:
He doesn’t eat seafood and neither does she atau He doesn’t eat seafood and she doesn’t either
2. Penggabungan berlawanan Elliptical Sentence
Elliptical construction jenis penggabungan berlawanan dipergunakan saat kedua kalimat yang akan digabungkan memiliki sifat berlawanan atau saat salah satu kalimat merupakan kalimat positif dan kalimat yang lain merupakan kalimat negatif. Pada model penggabungan kalimat ini, digunakan kata hubung but dan while.
Contohnya:
- I like Ice cream
Doni don’t like Ice cream
Kedua kalimat diatas bisa digabungkan menjadi:
I like Ice cream but Doni don’t atau I like Ice cream, while Doni don’t
